The Best Makeup for Oily Skin

If your a women with oily skin, then I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how important it is to find the right makeup for your skin type.

Helping to avoid the streak and shine that is so often associated with a build up of excess oil on the skins surface.

Furthermore if you have oily skin then the odds are your struggling with breakouts and skin that could possibly be acne prone, which is why choosing the best makeup for an oily skin is important, helping your face to look as flawless as possible.

In my teens I really suffered from oily skin conditions and found it difficult to find a makeup regime that truly suited my skin.

Fast forward a few years and with the advent of mineral makeup there is now a great deal of choice available.

Working within the spa industry I am fortunate enough to have worked with many makeup formulas, and these are my tried and tested makeup kit staples, that I like to include as part of my beauty routine:

Makeup Primer for Oily Skin

I personally love primers, they tend to act as a bridge between the skin and foundation and in my opinion they should become an essential step of your makeup routine.

Some formulas are specifically designed to reduce the appearance of pores and have mattifying properties,  helping to absorb excess oil off the surface, giving your base longevity.

Concealer Makeup Base for Oily Skin

Color match is key when choosing makeup for oily skin especially when it comes to your  concealer.

If you are wanting to cover pimples and breakouts a warmer shade is going to be a lot more flattering then an excessively pale color, as this will only draw attention to any imperfections you are trying to disguise.

I find that cream textures work really well, giving maximum coverage over breakouts and pimples.

The best technique is to use a concealer brush, in order to gently build up coverage by layering your concealer over the area until you get the desired result.

Foundation for Oily Skin

Start out by looking for a foundation that is both oil free and has a matte finish, one that will give you complete coverage and help to even out skin tone, whilst controlling oil production.

Although this may seem like a paradox you should still focus on using just a very light covering of foundation. This allows your skin to breathe normally and ensures your makeup doesn’t look to caked on.

I find the best mineral makeup for oily skin types are powder compact formulas. They are great touch up tools for helping to minimize shine.

Selecting a foundation is very personal experience, no one size fits all! So ensure you do your research well and opt for a mineral formula that is as pure as possible.

Minerals are non comedogenic, which means they won’t block pores which are responsible for those pesky break outs.

When thinking about how to apply your makeup base, it is important that you keep your skin as clean and free from bacteria as possible.

Bacteria flourishes in oily skin, which can lead to breakouts and acne skin.

Your fingers have natural oils on them, which are immediately transferred to your skin so use brushes or sponges instead which are far more hygienic.

Blusher selection

From my experience I would try to avoid using a cream or gel blush if you have oily skin, as this will only add shine and contribute to oil production.

Instead I find the best makeup for oily skin is a powdered matte blush, one that will give you the same even coverage and texture that you are getting from your matte powder and foundation.

As with foundation always apply your blush with a brush. This will help to give even coverage and will avoid oil transfer during your application.

Powder Makeup for Oily Skin

Your makeup will not be complete without face powder, which I feel is the ultimate product for setting your base in place.

Opt for a matte powder makeup for oily skin, that works as a blotter. Absorbing any excess oil and keeping your foundation locked in place, so it is fresh throughout the day.

The best technique is to use a cosmetic sponge, and apply your powder by pressing down onto the foundation with a blotting motion. This will help to set your makeup in place, so that you avoid foundation melt down, which can occur halfway through the day.

When choosing a powder I recommend selecting a color that is one shade lighter than your own foundation, as powders do have a tendency to go darker on oily skin.

One more simple tip that I love to use, is to keep rice papers handy. They are perfect little touch up papers that you can apply whilst on the go, helping to control shine and minimize oil throughout the day.

Finally the good news is that there are some advantages of having oily skin.

The natural oils in the products help to keep the skin nice and plump, so that the visible signs of aging don’t appear until much later on in life, which means you stay younger for longer.

Hopefully with these tips in mind you will have an easy time creating beautiful makeup for your skin.
